It is hard to imagine that the dermalogica empire started from the humble beginnings of the passion and determination of one beauty therapist – Jane Wurwand. Jane was educated in England and first worked in a hairdressers with a beauty room. It was a hard reality to try and interest hairdressing clients in a loud, chatty atmosphere to try out skin care treatments and coax them to have a massage – but try and succeed she did.
Jane knew that the ingredients in the products she was using could be greatly improved but everywhere she looked she was disappointed. All the large product companies were using artificial fragrances, colours and cheap oil based ingredients. Jane had a deep desire to live and work in America even though at the time no one took her seriously – she went and did it.
It was in 1986 that she founded the dermalogica brand and from small beginnings the empire began to grow to the immense magnitude that it is today. Apart from the products Jane has always had a passion for training, ensuring that the therapists that use the brand have the knowledge and techniques to give the very best treatments.
The original dermalogica products known affectionately as the grey line were so different to anything else in the market place when first released. The packaging was simple and quite clinical looking. The ingredients were boldly displayed on the packaging, all the containers were hygienically designed, there were no strong perfumes or colours and there was no heavy advertising – just a fantastic different ethical product – at last!
One of Jane’s great gifts is to have the intuition to source and feel what people want, what they are looking for next and what the current vibes are – it’s like having a global sixth sense, but also she is not afraid to act on that intuition.
There is also a great man behind Jane Wurwand – her husband Raymond – who brings to the company his own marketing talents and full support – they are a formidable team.
The brand has gone on to specialising in different skin conditions offering the very latest and newest ingredients in skin care research and delivering the upmost results in a safe, skin friendly product.
