What Does Pigmentation, Richard Branson and Dermalogica have in Common?

Pigmentation, Richard Branson and Dermalogica….

It is interesting how different people’s skins are, it is almost a tell tale life story on their face. Skin never lies and there is no hiding the fact if it has been abused, diseased, neglected, stressed or a host of many other underlying factors.

I notice that I am seeing a lot more skin with pigmentation and age spots coming through my Dermalogica Skin Care Centre these days. Most of these clients are in the baby boomer generation and are now having to deal with past sins in the sun and to be fair it is not all their fault as a lot more is known about sun damage now.

How do we treat this problem with Dermalogica and Skin Treatments?

Well firstly I would prescribe a product that will help to brighten, balance uneven pigmentation that will help to brighten, balance uneven pigmentation, help breakup and prevent future pigmentation and illuminate the skin. A tall order you may think but there are actually ingredients out there that do achieve this.

Another problem is hypo pigmentation this occurs when there is a decrease of pigmentation in the skin therefore white spots or small patches appear on the skin.

Vitamins can help in removing pigmentation from the skin especially vitamin A and C as these vitamins normalise the skin and stop the production of tyrosinase which activates the production of melanin (brown pigment).

Richard Branson’s Skin and the Signs of Sun Damage

Jennifer "Beauty Dermalogica Guru" Meets Richard Branson

Me and Richard Branson

On a recent visit to Melbourne I was fortunate to attend a cocktail party where Sir Richard Branson had been invited. He is a very interesting positive person and he mentioned he spends six months in the year on his beautiful Caribbean Necker Island. Every morning whilst he is on the island he goes for a ninety minutes swim around the island usually on his own.

Now while this is so good for his healthy mind and body it was beginning to tell on his neck and face by the sun damage that was starting to show on his skin (you know being a skin therapist I can’t help looking at people’s skin and being this close to Sir Richard you just can’t help to look!) Sir Richard Branson’s hair looked in fabulous condition and he definitely keeps in shape but I would have loved the opportunity to work on his skin and make that too, glow with health!

IPL or Intense Pulse Light is a great way of treating hyper pigmentation cause by excess sun exposure and usually gives fabulous results. Microdermabrasion or glycolic peels are also a great way to prep the skin first before IPL as the results I find are even better. Also about four weeks after IPL a microdermabrasion or glycolic peel is a superb treatment to have for improving the look of the skin even more.

Sunscreens either physical or chemical should always be worn all year as ultraviolet light is always present and ready to pounce on unprotected skin. Go for an SPF30 broad spectrum sunscreen and one that is a skin treatment too like Dermalogica’s Dynamic Skin Recovery SPF30 – I love this one. Dermalogica also has sunscreens for oily, sensitive, inflammatory skin, dry skin and skin’s that like a tinted sun block.

Pigmentation is not choosy on its victims, many celebrities and famous people suffer from it (aswell as everybody else) and it is not always on the face, damage can occur anywhere that has been sun damaged.

Choose products that do not contain hydroquinone which is a bleaching cream and is banned in most countries. There can be severe allergic reactions to this product such as a rash, hives, difficulty breathing, tightness in the chest, swelling of the mouth, face, lips or tongue, blistering blue-black darkening of the skin, cracking or excessive dryness, redness, stinging or irritation and this is not all the list of side effects that can occur.

Dermalogica Chromawhite Range

Dermalogica Chromawhite C-12 Concentrate is great for brightening, lightening and repairing the skin but even better is Dermalogica Chromawhite TRX Brightening Kit which has the complete range of six products which will all target uneven skin with a potent range of active ingredients. MD Formulations also have a great illuminating range which includes a serum and a masque.

Priori Skin Care too has very active products called Even Tones which is said to have given 92% reduction in pigmentation in just eight weeks.

If you are looking for a natural skin brightener then Priori Coffeeberry Brightening Facial Complex is for you. This 98.5% natural product is made by priori and has been specifically designed for reducing the appearance of uneven skin tones. It is ideal for irregular pigmentation, sun damaged skin and was developed by scientists (no doctors) and delivers the most advanced science and therefore the best ant aging results.

Dermalogica Chroma White – Pure Night Moisturiser

Dermalogica Chroma White Pure Night

Dermalogica's Pure Night Moisturiser

Dermalogica Chroma White system is a professional skin care system for helping to reduce hyper-pigmentation. It’s a whole system designed to prep the skin, treat the existing hyper-pigmentation and preventing future pigmentation all while providing skin results. In fact dermalogica found that by preparing the skin (by exfoliating the pigmentation – brown patches areas) and protecting the skin from further sun damage are two of the most critical things when trying to treat hyper-pigmentation on your skin. That is why they have six key products that target your skin health and hyper-pigmentation at the same time.

I am going to tell you about dermalogica’s Pure Night which is one of the products from the Chroma White Range and why you should use it, what it will do for your skin and how it works.

Dermalogica Pure Night

Pure Night is a pigmentation brightening moisturiser (that treats hyper-pigmentation and protects)  that like the name suggests for ‘night-time use’. The key brightening ingredients in the dermalogica Chroma White range is the exclusive oligopeptide-34, this peptide which helps to prevent pigmentation in the cells of your skin for superior skin brightening results. When your skin is under stress which could be from UV radiation, irritation, stress or exposure to chemicals your skin responds by making melanin (melanin is your pigment in the skin that controls the colour).

Oligopeptide-34 works by stopping the trigger from reaching the melanin, therefore stopping it to produce pigment. This peptide also stops the skin from transferring the melanin to other cells in the skin. This peptide was developed by dermalogica and an Asian company and so far dermalogica is the only skin care company that is using this peptide. The results from this peptide have been amazing (what I have been told), it is also said to be far superior to Vitamin C and works on lightening your skin.

Pure Night not only boosts the most newest peptide on the market for pigmentation(Oligopeptide-34 – a big dose of it) but it also contains Lactobacillus Pumpkin Fruit Ferment Filtrate which exfoliates your skin to smooth it’s appearance and help to eliminate those dreaded age spots (pigmentation) and boost the brightening process on your skin by treating and fighting pigmentation at the same time.

Pure Night is a moisturiser so it also works by protecting the barrier function of your skin over night with the help from Jojoba Seed, Cranberry and Raspberry Seed Oils that protect your skin from moisture loss. I find that the consistency of Pure Night is kind of  like Skin Smoothing Cream (a medium-weight moisturiser) it’s not too heavy, just right, Pure Night feels beautiful on the skin, very calming and hydrating and conditions your skin at the same time but if your skin is more on the drier side you can actually apply dermalogica’s Super Rich Repair over the top for extra hydration if you need it.

More than just a moisturiser Pure Night has time (over the night) to work on your skin delivering active and stabilised Vitamin C to prevent more pigmentation and deliver brightening and also helps to smooth fine dryness lines! Ninacinamide is used to topically control any inflammation in your skin (dermalogica always use calming ingredients in there products which I like) but it also helps to decrease pigmentation along with White Tea to enhance the brightening process once again.

Pure Night is a really nice moisturiser, very calming, great consistency and feels wonderful on the skin along with it’s brightening properties, however please remember that if you are seriously considering at reducing your pigmentation you need to use the whole Chroma White Range to get results and expect to wait at least sixty days before you can see a difference.

The Power of Peptides

Dermalogica and The Power of Peptides in Skin Care

Dermalogica Peptides
Dermalogica’s Powerful Peptides

Dermalogica has always looked at the use of ingredients in their skin care range with integrity, in fact there are many of the dermalogica skin care products which have peptides in them. Before I get into the dermalogica products that contain peptides and there uses, I want to go over what actually are peptides and how they benefit the skin.

What Are Peptides?

Peptides are a chains of protein fragments. Scientists can control the amount of amino acids in the peptide, how they are linked together and what response they want in the skin, depending on how the amino acids are ordered. Peptides are made in the laboratory (synthetically made) and they are the big discovery in the skin care world, with this new state of the art technology.

To give you an example of a peptide which you are familiar with is collagen. Collagen is a big amino acid chain of one thousand amino acids. Peptides made today are not very big compared to collagen, grouping amino acids into bundles of two, three, four and up to thirty four, not sure if they go higher than this? They are small so they can penetrate into the skin.

Peptides Used in Dermalogica Skin Care

Dermalogica have started implementing peptides into there formulations. The Age Smart range is full of them! Below I am going to list the peptides used, and what they are going to do in the skin, and the dermalogica products.

Dermalogica Age Smart Peptides

Dermalogica use these peptides in there Age Smart Line:-

Polypeptide (two amino acids) – Consisting of Argenine and Lysine – This peptide is wonderful it is used to trap suger to preven glycation taking place in the skin – basically helping to prevent your collagen and elastin breaking down. This peptide is found in Dermalogica’s Anti-oxidant Hydramist (if you are using multi-active toner and you are concerned about aging, give this a try!), dynamic skin recovery SPF 30, super rich repair, and even dermalogica’s renewal lip complex!

Palmitoyl Tripeptide-5 (three amino acids) – Palmitoyl is a carrier, which allows the peptides to enter the epidermis and begin to work. The tripeptide works at stimulating collgen, firming the skin and control the effects of enzymes that are responsible for breaking down different types of collagen and elastin within the skin. This peptide is used in Dermalogica’s Super Rich Repair, Anti-Oxidant Hydramist and Dynamic Skin Recovery SPF30.

Palmitoyl Pentapeptide-3 (five amino acids)  – Again Palmitoyl is a carrier, which allows the peptides to enter the epidermis and begin to work. The pentapeptide is responsible for alerting our cells to produce more collagen and hylauronic acid (which is the hydration in our skin). This peptide is used in dermalogica’s Power Rich Super Cream, when we reach thirty we lose 1% of collagen every year, so peptides are great way to stimulate different types of collagen in the skin, giving you plumper less wrinkled skin! I also have found that dermalogica’s extra firming booster uses this peptide for it’s firming effect. Palmitoyl Pentapeptide-3 functions similar to vitamin C and Retinol (Vitamin A)!

Palmitoyl Oligopeptide (five amino acids) – Palmitoyl is a carrier, which allows the peptides to enter the epidermis and begin to work. Oligopeptide is a new peptide that conditions the skin and stimulates collagen formation and researchers are saying it is one of the next best ingredients next to retinol, with the added advantage of not having any side effects. This amazing peptide can be found in dermalogica’s renewal lip complex (Yes a lip balm with peptides, have a look at the link, you will see how amazing this lip product truly is), and even dermalogica’s sunscreen/moisturiser for mature skin extra rich face block SPF30!

Palmitoyl Tetrapeptide-7  – This is the peptide that dermalogica so far only uses in it’s extra rich face block sunscreen, this peptide like the oligopeptide also is responsible for stimulating collagen and hylauronic acid therefore helping to increase elasticity and firmness within the skin.

Palmitoyl Oligopeptide-34 (thirteen amino acids) – This peptide addresses pigmentation (brown marks on the skin). Dermalogica developed this peptide with a biopharmaceutical company, and when they tested this peptide they were blown away with the results. They even have studies showing that this peptide is superior to vitamin C, and getting pigment reduction up to 47% improvement compared to vitamin C’s 27% reduction. With any skin care product for pigmentation you need to use the product regularly and always wear sunscreen and reapply. You need to have patience when using any pigmentation product, as it normally takes about four weeks for you start to see results. This peptide can be found in dermalogica’s chroma white range of products, the C-12 Concentrate, Pure Light SPF30 and Pure Night.

As you can see in dermalogica’s skin care range there are many dermalogica peptides being used, it is exciting to see what we will see next in the future of skin care products.
