What Does Pigmentation, Richard Branson and Dermalogica have in Common?

Pigmentation, Richard Branson and Dermalogica….

It is interesting how different people’s skins are, it is almost a tell tale life story on their face. Skin never lies and there is no hiding the fact if it has been abused, diseased, neglected, stressed or a host of many other underlying factors.

I notice that I am seeing a lot more skin with pigmentation and age spots coming through my Dermalogica Skin Care Centre these days. Most of these clients are in the baby boomer generation and are now having to deal with past sins in the sun and to be fair it is not all their fault as a lot more is known about sun damage now.

How do we treat this problem with Dermalogica and Skin Treatments?

Well firstly I would prescribe a product that will help to brighten, balance uneven pigmentation that will help to brighten, balance uneven pigmentation, help breakup and prevent future pigmentation and illuminate the skin. A tall order you may think but there are actually ingredients out there that do achieve this.

Another problem is hypo pigmentation this occurs when there is a decrease of pigmentation in the skin therefore white spots or small patches appear on the skin.

Vitamins can help in removing pigmentation from the skin especially vitamin A and C as these vitamins normalise the skin and stop the production of tyrosinase which activates the production of melanin (brown pigment).

Richard Branson’s Skin and the Signs of Sun Damage

Jennifer "Beauty Dermalogica Guru" Meets Richard Branson

Me and Richard Branson

On a recent visit to Melbourne I was fortunate to attend a cocktail party where Sir Richard Branson had been invited. He is a very interesting positive person and he mentioned he spends six months in the year on his beautiful Caribbean Necker Island. Every morning whilst he is on the island he goes for a ninety minutes swim around the island usually on his own.

Now while this is so good for his healthy mind and body it was beginning to tell on his neck and face by the sun damage that was starting to show on his skin (you know being a skin therapist I can’t help looking at people’s skin and being this close to Sir Richard you just can’t help to look!) Sir Richard Branson’s hair looked in fabulous condition and he definitely keeps in shape but I would have loved the opportunity to work on his skin and make that too, glow with health!

IPL or Intense Pulse Light is a great way of treating hyper pigmentation cause by excess sun exposure and usually gives fabulous results. Microdermabrasion or glycolic peels are also a great way to prep the skin first before IPL as the results I find are even better. Also about four weeks after IPL a microdermabrasion or glycolic peel is a superb treatment to have for improving the look of the skin even more.

Sunscreens either physical or chemical should always be worn all year as ultraviolet light is always present and ready to pounce on unprotected skin. Go for an SPF30 broad spectrum sunscreen and one that is a skin treatment too like Dermalogica’s Dynamic Skin Recovery SPF30 – I love this one. Dermalogica also has sunscreens for oily, sensitive, inflammatory skin, dry skin and skin’s that like a tinted sun block.

Pigmentation is not choosy on its victims, many celebrities and famous people suffer from it (aswell as everybody else) and it is not always on the face, damage can occur anywhere that has been sun damaged.

Choose products that do not contain hydroquinone which is a bleaching cream and is banned in most countries. There can be severe allergic reactions to this product such as a rash, hives, difficulty breathing, tightness in the chest, swelling of the mouth, face, lips or tongue, blistering blue-black darkening of the skin, cracking or excessive dryness, redness, stinging or irritation and this is not all the list of side effects that can occur.

Dermalogica Chromawhite Range

Dermalogica Chromawhite C-12 Concentrate is great for brightening, lightening and repairing the skin but even better is Dermalogica Chromawhite TRX Brightening Kit which has the complete range of six products which will all target uneven skin with a potent range of active ingredients. MD Formulations also have a great illuminating range which includes a serum and a masque.

Priori Skin Care too has very active products called Even Tones which is said to have given 92% reduction in pigmentation in just eight weeks.

If you are looking for a natural skin brightener then Priori Coffeeberry Brightening Facial Complex is for you. This 98.5% natural product is made by priori and has been specifically designed for reducing the appearance of uneven skin tones. It is ideal for irregular pigmentation, sun damaged skin and was developed by scientists (no doctors) and delivers the most advanced science and therefore the best ant aging results.

Christmas Party Season is Coming – Is Your Face up to it?

Spring is quickly coming to an end and before we know it summer will be here and Christmas events and parties will be written in your dairy. Now is the time to take a look at your skin and prepare it for the party season, with some of the quick fix Dermalogica Products.

One of the things you might notice are signs of skin dehydration, this usually presents itself as fine lines across the surface of your skin, especially when you lightly press the skin together with your fingers.

Dehydration is not good because it can make your skin appear older and can lead to sensitivity. Even though you can be extremely good at drinking your quota of water it is not necessarily going to magically hydrate your skin as your internal organs and circulation, digestion and every other organ will get in first.

To ensure that any additional hydrators that you apply to your skin are able to penetrate to their full potential you need to ensure that the skin is exfoliated first. Exfoliation is extremely important and gives lots of benefits besides letting the hydrators do their job.

There are different types of exfoliators too and it is very important that the correct ones are used for “your” skin condition. Exfoliation removes clogging surface debris allowing for optimal absorption of treatment ingredients, polishes the skin to create a smooth surface, sloughs off dead skin cells, speeds up cell turnover, brightens the skin and improves suppleness to the skin.

Exfoliation is something you can do at home and Dermalogica have a great range for each skin condition. From breakout prone and aging skin to hyper-pigmentation and dry, dehydrated skin. Exfoliation is important to the health and appearance of all skin conditions.

The ideal amount of exfoliation is one day of intense exfoliation with seven days of gentle exfoliation. If you wish to exfoliate deeper or speed the process along I would suggest you make an appointment with a skin care professional for a skin treatment.

I personally love Dermalogica Daily Resurfacer which I use at night after cleansing and leave on under my moisturiser. Just applying in circular movements all over my face so that it can work during the night. Daily Resurfacer is a combination of chemical and physical exfoliants that resurfaces, smoothes and brightens to improve all over skin clarity.

In the morning I use the perfect partner for Daily Resurfacer which is Daily Microfoliant. Dermalogica Daily Microfoliant gently sloughs off all the debris that has been produced during the night from daily resurfacer. There are lots of combinations in the Dermalogica range and one that will be perfect for you too.

Well now that you are perfecting your exfoliation the next stage is adding a booster or serum to super saturate your skin with intense moisture.  I love and strongly recommend Dermalogica’s Skin Hydrating Booster, this little beauty instensly moisturises thirsty skin as it smoothes and minimises fine lines.

One of the ingredients in Dermalogica’s Skin Hydrating Booster is Hyaluronic acid which should become your best friend as it holds a thousand times its weight in moisture and improves elasticity. It is ideal for the eye and lip areas showing dryness line.

One of the best things about dermalogica skin hydrating booster is that it is not oily so your face does not feel like it is being smothered with a greasy film, therefore your makeup is still fine to apply. I can’t say enough praise for this product as it restores the skin’s critical moisture levels, revitalises parched skin, minimises fine lines and is nutrient rich.

Just five or six drops of this product for your face and neck applied onto clean skin under your moisturiser will give you the results you need.

Well now you have exfoliated and targeted dehydration your skin should be well on the way to party mode – but I still have some more tips to get that beautiful skin glow!

Help, Breakout Alert! – The 101 Emergency Dermalogica Breakout Procedure!

Yes it always happens when you’ve got an important date, an interview or wedding day and the night before a mountainous zit appears.

The first thought that enters our head is “exterminate it” and you may even be tempted to squeeze it to a pulp. Unfortunately that would be the worst case scenarios for this, as not only may you end up with scaring/dermal pigment occurring but you could also spread the bacteria and another zit is born.

The best thing to do is to try and control our urge to kill it with our fingers/instruments and treat it effectively with ingredients that will not only eliminate the bacteria but accelerates the breakout clearing.

Dermalogica have a great little power pack called Dermalogica Special Clearing Booster which is specially formulated as a spot treatment eliminating the breakout causing bacteria in the follicles and helps clear skin while soothing irritation and regulating sebum production – this quickly dries out breakouts too.

Special Clearing Booster does contain Benzoyl Peroxide and if you are sensitive to this ingredient you would be probably better to use Dermalogica’s Concealing Spot Treatment as this does not contain Benzoyl Peroxide.

Dermalogica Concealing Spot Treatment can be used during the day over a dermalogica moisturiser. It has a natural looking tint which conceals and a host of fast acting ingredients to quickly dry up and heal breakouts and clearing congestion to help prevent future breakouts.

At night Dermalogica Overnight Clearing Gel is a winner (this product is an update of Dermalogica’s Medicated Clearing Gel). Apply a thin layer all over the area of concern and allow to absorb as this product will help to clear skin, calm inflammation and prevent future breakouts by reducing excess sebum, removing congestion in the pore and eliminating bacteria.

Well I have explained all you can do at home but if you want to boost up your treatment take yourself into a Dermalogica Skin Care Centre and have a Microzone Spot Clearing Treatment, or if you are located in Adelaide, you can always have a treatment with me at my Day Spa Adelaide Salon.

You can check out the Dermalogica Microzone Treatments Video Below

High Frequency is great for breakouts and if you do have a spot clearing treatment you may get the high frequency performed by a professional during your treatment. It works by reducing inflammation, eliminating toxins, killing bacteria and sterilising the breakout area – this is fantastic for zapping the blemish away.

How Stress Shows Up in Your Face!

How Stress Can Alter Your Skin

Famous for making necks tight, heads ache and stomachs upset, stress is becoming a recognised trigger to redness, itching, burning and flare-ups commonly classified as skin sensitisation.

And it’s a growing phenomenon: the American Academy of Dermatology reports up to 50% of the U.S population experience some form of sensitive skin. Sensitised skin can be triggered in any person regardless of racial background or skin colour. Excessive exposire to skin-damaging environmental factors like chemical pollutants are frequent sensitisers. For example: Approximately 36% of the population in China has declared themselves as “sensitive”, a condition that may in fact be attributed to the high level of pollution in both rural and urban parts of this region.

What happens on the surface is stemming from a biological reaction in the body: inflammation. Inflammation is the immune system’s (immunogenic) response to infection and foregin invaders. just as irritating chemicals and excess exfoliation can trigger inflammation and red stinging, itching skin, researchers recognise neurogenic inflammation (stemming from the nervous system), is also triggered by emotional and physical stress. It yeilds the same red, stinging, itching response and could even be responsible for severe skin disorders including psoriasis, rosacea and atopic dermatitis.

As science explores these multiple pathways, Dermalogica continues to research ingredients to deliver serious relief for sensitised skin.

Scientifically Speaking

Hydrocortisone is a commonly used steroid that helps reduce inflammation. It’s purpose, however is to provide short-term relief, not long-term control of itching and redness. In addition, Hydrocortisone has the potential drawback of thinning skin and when used long-term, skin can build up a resistance and require stronger steroids as a result.

Opt instead for powerful ingredients that soothe, cool, reduce redness and impact the multiple pathways behind inflammation for better control of flare-ups.

Three Key Ingredients Include:-

  • Avena Sativa (Oat Kernal) extracts: Rich in avenanthramides, which have been widely studied and proven to have natural anti-irritant and anti-redness properties.
  • Zingiber Officinale (Ginger) extract and Bisabolol (derived from Chamomile): Work synergistically to help reduce inflammation induced redness and irritation.
  • Boerhavia Diffusa (Red Hogweed) Root Extract: Targets neurogenic inflammation while soothing properties restore skin to a normal sensitivity level, providing immediate and long-lasting effects.

You Can Find These Ingredients in the New Dermalogica UltraCalming Range.

Dermalogica’s New Beauty School

Dermalogica’s New Beauty School

Dermalogica Academy
The New Dermalogica Academy

I am really excited to discover that dermalogica has recently opened it first skin care school, called the “dermalogica academy”. This dermalogica school has been designed to turn people into dermalogica skin care therapists, where they will learn the dermalogica art form of face mapping, professional skin care treatments, the skin bar process, microzone treatments, body treatments and even professional waxing and make up techniques and at the end of the course you will become a licensed skin care professional.

I am excited, the centre looks amazing this academy has just opened in America (New York), I wish they would open this in Australia, I would of loved to do my training with them.

Dermalogica have not scrimped when they designed this beauty centre, it has the latest gadgets and gizmo’s and I think there concept will do very well, I suppose they are preparing their students to be experts in dermalogica, so they are able to work in dermalogica stores and skin care centres around the world, kind of like Ella Bache here in Australia where you can learn to be a Ella Bache beauty therapist and then work in one of the Ella Bache Salons or open your own store.

If you ever get the chance to go to New York, you can book to have a skin care treatment with one of the students for a cheaper price, and experience the total dermalogica experience.

Check out the dermalogica academy here

Any way let me know what you think of the new dermalogica academy! Leave your comments below.

Dermalogica Shave – Great Men’s Range, But Great for Women Too!

Dermalogica’s Mens Range

Dermalogica Shave Skin Care System

Skin Care For Men By Dermalogica

It was about time that dermalogica came out with some excellent men’s products, listening to my client’s and from my own observations with my husband, men are becoming more aware that they should be looking after there skin. Most men start by using there partners skin care range before ever venturing out and buying skin care. Thanks to dermalogica there is now a wonderful range of skin care made for men, however trying it out myself – I can say I am a little jealous! The products feel, smell and are fantastic, they are a really good thought out range for the male skin type and the prices are really good value.

Dermalogica’s Easy Skin Care Routine

Dermalogica I think have it right with this Shave Range, it really is quick, simple and easy to use and becuase of this most males will use it. They have a wonderful scrub called Daily Clean Scrub, I tried this and I have to say I find it one of the best scrubs out there, I even like it better than Skin Prep Scrub! The great thing about this scrub is is can actually be used daily on male skin’s and really gives the skin a good clean!

If your man suffers with a heavy beard or has really very sensitive skin then using the pre-shave guard before applying your shaving product actually buffers the skin and softens the hairs, this actually helps reduce any irritation from razors – my son-in-law loves this as he suffers with sensitive skin from shaving.

Choose Your Way To Shave

In this Dermalogica Shave range there is actually three ways you can shave the skin. Men have a choice of soothing shave cream, invigorating shave gel and the close shave oil. Now being a dermalogica fanatic I have actually tried all of these on my skin to see what they feel like and I can tell you that if you suffer with sensitive skin or dry skin you will love the soothing shave cream, it’s so creamy and very hydrating and calming to the skin. The invigorating shave gel says what it is – it is invigorating, it really freshens up your skin, fells very cool but soothes at the same time, it has a foaming action, kind of like Special Cleansing Gel. Invigorating Shave is great for oily skin conditions. The close shave oil is a strange little product that men either love or hate, because it takes a little getting use too, but if you want a really close shave then this is your must have product to use and especially great if you have a goatee, beard or moustache. This shaving product works by acting as a buffer between your razor and skin with the use of silicone’s.

What To Do After Shaving

With a nice cleaned, shaved appearance, don’t stop here in your skin care routine, finish it off with dermalogica’s Post-Shave Balm – again I have tried this and it is brilliant, this is the product what I sneakily use from time to time just because it feels so good! But it actually lightly moisturises the skin, even helps to control oily shine and helps reduce ingrown hairs which can be a problem for a guy. I found this instantly soothes, it would be brilliant for men’s skin straight after shave it, it really is great.

Dermalogica even have a wonderful moisturiser for men to use daily. It is called Daily Defense Block, it has an SPF15 in it, it’s very light-weight it reminds me sort of  in between active moist and skin smoothing cream texture. It helps to fight against ingrown hairs, has antioxidants and vitamins in it, plus uses dermalogica’s UV smart booster technology. Every man should use this daily moisturiser it really is good at protecting and hydrating the skin.
